Resistentialism       ring ring!

An audio installation focused around the practice of Music on Hold and the telephone as music player / musical instrument. Music on Hold exists in a space that is highly aural, yet to a large extent non-musical. When music is used as a consumerist tool, it takes on drastically different qualities - in the case of Music on Hold, it accrues disdain and fades into the background, almost serving as an indicator of time passing.
The goal with this project was to bring Music on Hold out of the background and to the direct focus of our attention. The installation consisted of 15 telephones spliced and wired together. They played music designed to emulate the sounds of Music on Hold and to poke fun, poke holes, and dismantle the preconceptions of what people believe they can hear on hold.
